Higher education quality assurance organizations in several Asian countries jointly conducted the “International Survey on Learning Outcomes and Student Satisfaction in Taiwan – Thailand – Japan – Vietnam,” the results of which have recently been released. Among the findings are a number of noteworthy indicators regarding the quality of teaching and learning at Nguyen Tat Thanh University (NTTU).
Facilities and Administration – The Information Center–Library System Is a Major Strength of Nguyen Tat Thanh University
The survey results show that, when asked about the quality of the University’s library database and library services, the average satisfaction score of NTTU students was higher than that of more than 70% of the colleges and universities whose students participated in the survey.
In particular, the Information Center–Library System at Nguyen Tat Thanh University was one of the three highest-rated university library systems for the richness and diversity of its collections, including domestic and international books, newspapers, journals, and digitized electronic resources in both Vietnamese and foreign languages.
In addition to creating an internationalized learning environment, the University also provides numerous opportunities for students to interact with international faculty members and international students. The average score for this category was 4.08, the highest among the 18 universities participating in the study.
However, the use of electronic equipment in teaching and the availability of computer laboratory facilities were rated only at an average level, receiving scores of 4.14 and 3.93, respectively (ranking in the top 10 out of 18 universities).
Teaching and Learning – Several Indicators Maintained Top-Three Rankings
According to the students who participated in the survey, the teaching and learning programs at Nguyen Tat Thanh University help improve their competitiveness in the job market through extracurricular activities, study visits, and by providing numerous internship opportunities that enable students to gain practical experience.
The University has also effectively implemented academic advising, career guidance, student counseling, and psychological support services. The average scores for these categories consistently remained among the top three highest-rated universities, with scores ranging from 3.90 to 4.10.
According to the survey findings, students reported that the University regularly organizes effective alumni sharing sessions, career counseling, and employment guidance activities. As a result, students are able to develop clear career plans and directions while still at university.
Overall, Nguyen Tat Thanh University students’ learning outcomes and satisfaction levels were rated above average across most survey categories.
Alongside the areas that received outstanding evaluations, several indicators were rated only as satisfactory when compared with the results of the other participating universities. Specifically, the category “alignment between instructors’ academic expertise and the subjects they teach” received an average score of 4.19, ranking 10th out of 18 universities, while “interactive learning activities (asking questions and class discussions)” received 4.18, ranking 11th out of 18 universities.
These are also among the areas that the University and its academic faculties should continue to review, improve, and further enhance.
The “International Survey on Learning Outcomes and Student Satisfaction in Taiwan – Thailand – Japan – Vietnam” was conducted in 2021 by the Center for Education Accreditation, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, in collaboration with three higher education quality assurance organizations from Taiwan, Thailand, and Japan.
The survey was conducted online from July 1 to August 29, involving more than 5,000 students from 18 leading universities located in major cities across Vietnam, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Da Lat, and Can Tho.
The survey examined students’ learning outcomes, perceptions of academic programs, teaching methods, learning resources and instructional materials, satisfaction with facilities and teaching equipment, and the quality of the University’s academic guidance and student support services.
The survey used a five-point scale to measure respondents’ perceptions, agreement, and satisfaction. On this scale, 1 represents strongly disagree, very dissatisfied, or do not understand at all, while 5 represents strongly agree, very satisfied, or understand very well.
