Four More Academic Programs at Nguyen Tat Thanh University Achieve 5-Star Ratings under the UPM Higher Education Quality Benchmarking System (Vietnam and Region)

On March 20, 2023, the University Performance Metrics (UPM) benchmarking system for higher education quality in Vietnam and the region announced the benchmarking results for four academic programs at Nguyen Tat Thanh University. All four programs achieved 5-star ratings, including: Bachelor of Biotechnology Engineering, Bachelor of Food Technology Engineering, Bachelor of Information Technology, and Automotive Engineering Technology Engineering.

In this benchmarking cycle, all four academic programs of Nguyen Tat Thanh University belong to the fields of Natural Sciences and Technology. The Biotechnology Engineering program achieved 5 stars under the research-oriented track (791 points). The Food Technology Engineering program (787 points), the Bachelor of Information Technology (762 points), and the Automotive Engineering Technology Engineering program (761 points) all achieved 5 stars under the application-oriented track.

Overall, the programs achieved high scores across four standards:

  • Standard 1 – Strategic Alignment: 96.5–99 points
  • Standard 2 – Teaching and Learning: 211.5–235.5 points
  • Standard 6 – Community Service: 47.5–60 points
  • Standard 7 – Distinctiveness/Excellence: 62.5–80 points

Notably, the Biotechnology Engineering program achieved a very high score in Standard 3 – Research and Innovation (254/280 points). The Automotive Engineering Technology program recorded the highest score among the four programs in Standard 2 – Teaching and Learning (235.5 points) and Standard 5 – Internationalization (35.5 points). The Food Technology Engineering program achieved the maximum score in Standard 6 – Community Service (60/60 points). Meanwhile, the Information Technology and Automotive Engineering Technology programs both achieved maximum scores in Standard 7 – Distinctiveness (80/80 points).

In addition, this is the second time the Bachelor of Information Technology program has participated in UPM benchmarking, showing significant improvement in three standards:

  • Standard 3 – Research and Innovation (increase of 32 points)
  • Standard 6 – Community Service (increase of 12.5 points)
  • Standard 7 – Distinctiveness (increase of 5 points)
    contributing to its upgrade from 4 Stars Plus (2021) to 5 Stars.
Top 10 academic programs in the UPM higher education quality benchmarking rankings

To date, along with three other programs—Bachelor of Accounting, Bachelor of Finance and Banking, and Bachelor of Restaurant Management and Food Service—Nguyen Tat Thanh University has seven academic programs rated 3 Stars Plus or higher under the UPM standards. In particular, the Biotechnology Engineering and Food Technology Engineering programs were ranked 4th and 7th respectively among 42 academic programs from domestic and international institutions participating in the UPM benchmarking rankings.

Academic programs participate in benchmarking according to field orientation:

    • Application-oriented (SSA)

The difference between research-oriented and application-oriented benchmarking lies in variations in benchmark thresholds for certain criteria, particularly in Teaching and Learning (Standard 2), Research and Innovation (Standard 3), and Distinctiveness (Standard 7).
